Top 10 Ski & Save Tips

October 30th, 2009

directski2gview Top 10 Ski & Save Tips

Are you planning a ski holiday this winter?

British online ski holiday specialist Directski.com has come up with 10 ways to ski and save this winter like booking a ski holiday online from £199.  The best part is some of these ski and save tips are environmentally friendly too.

Here are the Top 10 Ski & Save Tips:

1. “SKI WITH FRIENDS.  Tip: Take a ski apartment for 6 or more and the cost per person tumbles. Fill it with friends, set up a Facebook page or ask around for people to share.”

2. “VALUE BY TRAIN. Tip: Travel by train and save on airline excess luggage costs. The ski train from London to the Alps every Friday night also gives you an extra day’s skiing.”

3. “SKI WITH A GRANNY. Tip: Bring a relative to look after kids as it’s often cheaper to take an extra person than to use local nannies and kindergartens.”

4. “DIY MOUNTAIN LUNCH. Tip: Pop into the local supermarket or bakery for an inexpensive alternative to mountain restaurants. (Of course we wouldn’t suggest you snaffle from the hotel’s breakfast buffet).”

5. “PAY AS YOU GO. Tip: Book early and pay in instalments to break up the cost into affordable chunks.”

Have you ever wondered what’s your carbon footprint during your hotel stay?

Finland’s Klaus K  Hotel has become one of the first hotels to provide its guests with exact information on their carbon footprint.  On the hotel’s website, a carbon footprint calculator, developed by Ecompter, allows guests to calculate their carbon footprint per night of their stay.

“We started the cooperation with Ecompter as we want to be the front runner in our field by our own actions, “explains Mia Cederberg-Skvorc, the hotel’s director of sales and operations. “With the help of the calculator, we can measure our carbon footprint in real time and develop our further actions in more environmental friendly directions based on the calculator results.”

Average carbon dioxide emission for a one-night stay at a hotel is between 10 – 30 kg CO2-e, according to Ecompter.com.  Hotel carbon emissions include direct and indirect emissions of consumption of electricity, heating energy, water and waste.

Is “Eco-pricing” A Travel Trend?

October 27th, 2009

NaturalHabitatAdventuresSL exbots 02 Is Eco pricing A Travel Trend?

Is “eco-pricing” a new travel trend?

Eco-tour provider Natural Habitat Adventures has announced new  “Eco-Pricing” with its local operators, hotels and transportation providers around the world.  They’re hoping to increase traveler visits through savings to sensitive habitats including U.S. grizzly territory, Mexico’s winter home for monarch butterflies, South America, India and Africa.

An exclusive Conservation Travel Provider to World Wildlife Fund, the award-winning company has been named a 2009 Best Adventure Travel Company by National Geographic Adventure and a 2009 World’s Best Tour Operator by Travel + Leisure.

Says Natural Habitat Adventures founder and director Ben Bressler:

“We’ve always been innovators in responsible tourism – from being the first U.S. tour company to go carbon neutral to creating the first hybrid safari vehicle – and we’re always looking for that next idea. It suddenly hit us that in tough economic times perhaps the biggest idea is the simplest: Lower prices mean more travel – which means more support for threatened places. You’ll see our Eco-pricing logo all over our catalog and website, and we’ve had a great response to those efforts. It’s not a discount for discount’s sake; it’s clearly tied to our broader environmental mission, and that deeper message seems to resonate with our guests.”

The company’s Eco-Pricing program offers savings on 25+ Natural Habitat Adventures’ small-group experiential nature expeditions.

Green travelers to Florida will have more green hotel options this fall/winter.

Eleven more lodging facilities have joined the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Green Lodging Program. They have implemented green practices that are protective of Florida’s natural resources.  To date, 579 lodging facilities in Florida are now designated in the state’s voluntary program.

Says DEP Director of Sustainable Initiatives Deas Bohn:

“Lodging facilities are recognizing the value in green just in time for fall visitors and the upcoming holiday travel season. By adopting practices that protect Florida’s environment without sacrificing the comforts of their guests, these 11 facilities are setting a great example of environmental stewardship for Floridians and visitors alike.”

The new designations statewide are:

Northwest
• Courtyard by Marriott, Panama City
• Ramada Hotel and Conference Center, Tallahassee
• Residence Inn Tallahassee Universities at the Capitol, Tallahassee

Northeast
• Courtyard by Marriott – Kendall Town, Jacksonville
• Park Place, Cedar Key

Central
• Country Inn and Suites, Cape Canaveral
• Hyatt Place, Lake Mary
• Nickelodeon Family Suites, Orlando

Southeast
• Holiday Inn Fort Lauderdale Airport, Fort Lauderdale
• Wyndham Garden Hotel, Boca Raton

South
• Holiday Inn Express, Bonita Springs

The Florida Green Lodging Program, launched in 2004, establishes environmental guidelines for hotels and motels to conserve natural resources and prevent pollution.  Designated members must adopt green practices to conserve energy, reduce water consumption, protect air quality and reduce waste.
