Planting Trees For Earth Month

New Tree Nursery in Haiti

A new tree nursery in Haiti.

Active travel company AdventureSmith Explorations has pledged to plant 100 trees for every new traveler booked on one of its journeys during Earth Month, April 15-May 15, 2010.

After Earth Month, the company plans to continue to plant 10 trees for each traveler booked on any land-based program.  AdventureSmith Explorations will partner with nonprofit Trees for the Future for this program and hopes to plant 40,000+ trees in 2010.

Says Todd Smith, founder and president of AdventureSmith Explorations:

“Part of our mission is to give something back to the individuals, communities and environments encountered on each and every AdventureSmith Explorations journey…Plus we will offer travelers a 5 percent discount on any 2010 adventure cruise or land adventure booked during this promotion.”

If you’ll be in New York City for Earth Day, then check out Earth Week, the week-long program of events at New York University.

On Earth Day, NYU will participate in the 40th anniversary celebration with a street fair, film and lectures, green projects and an environmental networking dinner.  The university will get this big green party started early with a public panel discussion, movie screening and more.  All events will be free and open to the public.

Here are 10 NYU Earth Week Events:

See OCEANS The Movie

Disneynature will release its next film OCEANS on Earth Day, April 22, 2010.

Narrated by actor/environmentalist Pierce Brosnan, the film will show never-before-seen imagery captured by state-of-the-art underwater technologies.

During opening week, April 22-28, 2010, Disneynature  says it will make a donation to The Nature Conservancy to save coral reefs for every guest who sees OCEANS in its “See OCEANS, Save Oceans” program.

Earth Day Food & Wine Festival

Fancy a greener culinary experience?  Then check out the 4th Annual Earth Day Food & Wine Festival on April 16-18, 2010  in California at the Santa Margarita Ranch.

The annual festival brings together growers, vintners, chefs and food purveyors and “earth-conscious consumers”.  It’s organized by the Central Coast Vineyard Team, a non-profit grower-group whose mission is to “promote sustainable wine growing through agricultural research, education and farm worker outreach”.

Some 50+ farmers, ranchers, chefs and restaurants will be offering an array of food like a bruschetta bar to barbecue, ahi tacos to osso buco, pesto pasta to risotto Milanese.

Sustainably-minded producers participating in the festival will include Olea Farms Olive Oil; Nature’s Touch Nursery & Harvest; Bob’s Red Mill and Artisana Nut Butters.

What will you be doing for Earth Day on April 22, 2010?  In the Florida Keys, you will be able to experience diverse Earth Day events in April and March.

Here are  several events in the Florida Keys:

  • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, mile marker (MM) 102.5 oceanside in Key Largo.  “(The park) will celebrate by hosting a native plant day Saturday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attractions include guest speakers, informational booths, activities for children, guided tours and plant giveaways. Mention “native plant” or Earth Day at the park entrance for free admission.”
  • Bahia Honda State Park, MM 36.8. “One of the Keys’ biggest Earth Day celebrations is set for Saturday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m..  Park entry is free, and attractions include live music, a sand sculpture contest, fish printing, puppet shows and more than 20 environmental education booths.” » Read more: Earth Day In The Florida Keys
