Equitrekking host Darley Newman and local Bedouin guide Ibrahim El-Wahsh ride in Lawrence Siq in the Wadi Rum Desert during the filming of Equitrekking Jordan in Equitrekking’s new fifth season.

Darley Newman wrote this guest post on equitrekking.  She is the host, producer and creator of the Emmy Award-winning Equitrekking TV series and companion website Equitrekking.com and the founder of EquitrekkingTravel.com, which features equestrian vacations.

Looking for green vacation destinations? I experienced many exciting “green” travel adventures while filming the new season of Equitrekking, which debuts March 30th on Create TV, a Public Television lifestyle channel.

In Alberta, Canada, riding horses into Banff National Park, where vehicles are not permitted, allows us to reach beautiful Mystic Lake, whose milky blue, glacial-fed waters look amazing in person and in high definition.

Newman and local guide Barry Ferguson ride horses on a pack trip into Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada during the filming of Equitrekking Alberta.

We meet locals in Dana, a 15th century stone village on the edge of the Dana Nature Reserve in Central Western Jordan.

With the help of the World Bank, United Nations and The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, a nature reserve was founded in the area surrounding Dana Village in the 1990’s. The goal of the reserve is to protect the environment while sustaining the local community.

Today, most people in the village are involved in some aspect of the nature reserve and sustainable tourism. A visit to Dana allows travelers to step back in time in a peaceful setting, while also supporting a green tourism initiative.

Traveling with the Bedouin in the Wadi Rum Desert, we discover surprising desert plants and wildlife and capture extraordinary film footage of the Sinai Rosefinch searching for pools of water in a secluded canyon whose walls look like melted candles.

We also hike Wadi Mujib, Jordan’s version of the Grand Canyon, rappelling down a waterfall, before relaxing in the Dead Sea.

Newman and local guide Alicia Morales ride the grassy hills of Uruguay outside of Alicia’s estancia during the filming of Equitrekking Uruguay in Equitrekking’s new season.

In Uruguay, we visit a locally-owned estancia (ranch) powered by the wind, where grass fed beef is on the menu. Believe me, it’s certainly tasty.

The owner purports that much of the area has a special energy. I felt it, but you can judge for yourself and learn about green destinations that you can visit on the new season of Equitrekking.
