BOOKS

Nola Lee Kelsey has written several books on volunteering abroad, including The Voluntary Traveler and 700 Places to Volunteer Before You Die.

Shelley Seale has penned a book about her experiences in India, called The Weight of Silence: Invisible Children of India, about the children helped by the Miracle Foundation, and includes an excellent list of resources.

Jane Stanfield has written an excellent workbook on volunteering, entitled Mapping Your Volunteer Vacation.

Are you a boomer who would like to teach or volunteer overseas? Doris Gallan is the author of The Boomers’ Guide to Going Abroad to Travel * Live * Give * Learn.

If you’d like to teach overseas, please think first about How to Choose a School. This article covers thinking about why teach abroad, types of schools (Peace Corps, State Department or Department of Defense schools, International schools, private schools), cultural situations, etc. It’s always a good idea to start with What you want to do and Where you’d like to teach.

GO! Overseas is the most trusted resource on the Internet for researching study, teach and volunteer abroad programs around the world. The GO! Overseas website contains listings for nearly every program in the world, along with independent ratings, reviews, community forums and more.

Educators Overseas places native English-speaking teachers in international schools and other schools around the world.

World Endeavors provides immersive volunteer, intern, and study abroad programs.

Working Traveller and the Overseas Job Centre is a mixture of independent budget travel, ways to earn money to stay on the road and reduce costs by volunteering.

TeachingTraveling.com inspires and assists more teachers to travel and more travelers to teach!

Over50andOverseas.com is a resource of international volunteer opportunities for folks over 50.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

Don’t want to leave for long? Interested in a summer program?

The International Teacher Travel Program at the University of Wisconsin provides opportunities for experienced educators from throughout the USA to learn about the educational systems in countries around the world through first-hand experiences in selected overseas schools.

Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that helps and encourages educators to travel abroad. These trips are inexpensive, and you can earn continuing education credits.

On Wandering Educators, you can also find panel discussions on Teaching English as a Second Language, an ESL Educators Blog Carnival, and job postings and volunteering information from around the world.
