If you bliss out on beach holidays, then take a look at Portugal’s new Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel on the Western Algarve.
Opening in April 2010, the stylish, “barefoot luxury” resort has been designed with eco-conscious couples and families in mind. Situated on Martinhal Beach, the resort is surrounded by the protected Costa Vicentina National Park and close to the small fishing port of Sagres.
London architect Matthew Wood of Conran & Partners chose a series of “environmentally sensitive” low-rise buildings that merge into the landscape of the resort’s beach location and the national park.

The resort will be comprised of the 38- bedroom boutique Hotel Martinhal, Village Houses and privately-owned villas and townhouses. In the hotel and houses, the interiors will include classic, modern, furniture and local natural materials such as cork and wicker.
The hotel’s gourmet restaurant ‘O Terraco’ will feature Portuguese wines and “light but sophisticated dishes” using locally caught fish, artisan grown and prepared meats and seasonal vegetables and fruit, all from Portugal. In the village square, the ‘Mercado’ village store will also sell locally sourced fresh fish, meats, cheese, wine, bread and pastries.
At the Finisterra Spa, soothing treatments in its six wooden-clad rooms will be offered with Martinhal’s organic products. For more active holidays, there will be wide-ranging activities available from surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing, mountain biking, horse riding, snorkeling to scuba diving.
For info on the resort, visit Martinhal.com.

Thanks Donna!
Just drove past and saw the signs last week on my Algarve trip! Don’t know why I didn’t drop in for a visit. This looks pretty fabulous.
The Sagres area is lovely and I get over there on each of my semi-annual trips. In fact, I stayed in Sagres way back in 1975 on my very first trip – when it truly was just a tiny village!
For pre-history buffs, one thing many people don’t know is that there are some fabulous megaliths scattered about on the headlands in the area. Great walks, interesting explorations and many discoveries.
I also have a couple of Sagres and other Algarve West Coast restaurants written up in my new e-book Gwen’s Guide to Dining Well in the Algarve. It’s available free on-line. I’m uncomfortable using your comments opportunity to promote this further but I mention it because it is new this month (Jan 2010) and might be a value-add to your readers.
Thanks for transporting me from snowy, deep-freeze cold Ottawa, Canada back to my beloved Algarve for a few minutes!
