Dreaming of a guilt-free, active and educational spa break in the U.S.? Then take a look at these four top American green spas.
A 13,000-acre, family-run resort, just an hour from Atlanta, and nestled in the lush green foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Callaway Gardens offers its guests true tranquility and refuge.
With a 150-room rustic lodge, gardens aplenty, butterfly habitats, serpentine bridges, and a whole host of outdoor activities (biking, hiking, fishing, canoeing, and trails to name a few) this spa really does offer added value.
The spa offers natural treatments and Spa Prunifolia’s Gardens restaurant is entirely devoted to the Slow Food concept.
Another privately-run holistic spa, Sullivan Estate is an hour-and-a-half away from Honolulu on Oahu’s north shore.
Located on five acres of verdant, landscaped gardens overlooking the Pacific, the spa caters to group sizes between two and 12.
The beauty of this spa is that heating and electricity are solar-powered. Spa food is organic and, where possible, locally-sourced.
Treatments use resident owner Jurgen Klein’s new skin care line, JK7, which is made on-site using natural and organic ingredients. And what’s more, each guest receives a tailor-made itinerary, which will include an assortment of exercise, therapies and spa treatments.
Blue Marble Spa (@ the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay)
Hyatt’s first foray into the eco-friendly spa industry, the contemporary Blue Marble Spa is located in San Diego’s Mission Bay.
Adopting a very green ethos, this spa’s features include: natural and organic skin care products; organic food; low-flow showerheads and eco-friendly linens.
Mohonk Mountain House
This privately-owned, New York spa has been in the Smiley family for four generations since 1869. The serene, National Historic Landmark is located on 2,200 acres of meticulously cultivated land.
Its 50-year-old 5,000-acre-plus nature preserve received an award from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) “for generations of dedicated leadership and commitment to the protection and enhancement of the environment and for their inestimable contribution to the cause of peace, justice, and sustainable human development.”
The resort’s Junior Naturalist Experience will keep kids entertained and eco-educated if you want a spa that caters to the little ones.
Mohonk also maintains a CO2-free environment, while its spa features 200 windows that let the beauty of the outdoors in, and a geothermal heating and cooling system – all of which fits the green spa bill perfectly.
