Fancy walking in California wine country?   Kunde Family Estate has recently announced 2010 Eco-Education hikes including dog hikes and taste tours of the 1,850-acre estate.

Recently, the estate received third-party certification from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) for its ecologically sensitive winegrowing practices.   The family’s sustainable farming efforts have also earned awards including the 2nd Level Green Business Certification given by the San Francisco Bay Area Green Business Program in 2005 and 2009.

Says Jeff Kunde:

“At Kunde Family Estate, we believe that third-party certification and public education are equally important in winning the trust of wine drinkers. There is no better way to demonstrate that our commitment to the environment is real, and for our visitors to understand what sustainable winegrowing means and the role it plays in the quality of our 100% estate grown wines. We get the job done by taking people out into the vineyards to see these practices first-hand, while also having a great time and raising money for local charities.”

The scenic hiking programs are designed to educate and entertain wine and outdoor enthusiasts on sustainable winegrowing practices and eco-system management. They are  moderately strenuous and range from the Sonoma Valley floor up to 1,400 feet into the Mayacamas Mountain range.

Here are the upcoming hikes:

Eco-Tour Dog Hikes
“This tour with Jeff Kunde is a moderately strenuous three-mile hike through the 1,850-acre winegrowing estate with an elevation change of 800 feet. Lasting approximately four hours, the tour concludes at Boot Hill overlooking the Sonoma Valley. Here, dog walkers enjoy winetasting and a wine country box lunch, while dogs savor a water bar and special treats. A portion of the ticket proceeds benefit Canine Companions and the Sonoma County Humane Society.”

Hike & Taste in the Vineyards
“Sonoma Valley Docent Bill Myers leads this fun and casual hike through the 1,850 acre volcanic and vertical Kunde Family Estate. Guests taste wines along the way in the very vineyards where the grapes are grown. Moderately strenuous, the hike lasts approximately four hours. The tour concludes at the tasting room, where invigorated hikers sample Kunde Family Estate’s 100% estate-grown wines. Reservations are required. A portion of ticket proceeds benefit the Sonoma Ecology Center. Guests must pack a sack lunch, water and wear hiking boots or appropriate footwear. Sunscreen is highly recommended.”
