Fancy voluntouring in South Australia?  No worries, there are lots of available voluntourism projects from contributing to field research on endangered species to taking part in flora surveys on camel back.

Here are several organizations offering voluntourism experiences:

Earthwatch Australia is an organization that involves the public in scientific field research. Volunteers collect data under scientists’ direction and work as expedition members, sharing the costs of the research among them.  On a two-day expedition on Kangaroo Island, they learn about Australia’s most unusual animals and help conserve their ecosystem. Staying at the solar powered Pelican Lagoon Research and Wildlife Centre, they participate with researchers in searching for, radio-tracking, observing and recording the daily activities of the island’s echidnas and goannas.

Do you know Western Australia?

Tourism Western Australia and responsibletravel.com are publishing an insider’s guide to Western Australia (WA), including the best sustainable tours and places to stay and travel secrets from locals.

They’re holding a competition for the best travel tips and photos from anyone who has traveled in Western Australia to be part of this online guide.

The best tip or photo will win a place in the guide and a signed print of their choice from world renowned wildlife photographer Andy Rouse.  The runner up will win a signed copy of Andy’s Living Landscapes book.  Entries will be judged on originality and insight.

This insider’s guide, which will launch on November 9, will highlight the best natural and cultural experiences in Western Australia from camping in national parks to swimming with turtles at Ningaloo Reef.

All accommodation and tours featured are selected following a “responsible travel policy and ability to offer a distinctive travel experience that benefits the local community, while sustaining the area’s natural and cultural heritage.”

To enter, visit the competition page on IKnowAGreatPlace.com, add your tips and insider knowledge or upload your favorite photos. You must include Western Australia competition under ‘Select activities’.  Deadline is midnight on Friday, November 5, 2009.
