The 2011 Ford Explorer is a reinvented SUV with more recycled, renewable materials and increased fuel efficiency.

Ford Motor Company says the new Ford Explorer is 85 percent recyclable. Bio foam and recycled fabric were used in its interior and recycled steel in exterior parts.

The car manufacturer uses high-tech powertrains and mechanical enhancements to improve fuel economy by over 30 per cent.

Says Jim Holland, chief nameplate engineer:

“Ford has made tremendous strides, not only in improving fuel economy in the new Explorer, but also in using more environmentally friendly materials. By offering better fuel efficiency in an overall greener package, we’re offering our SUV customers an appealing and sustainable product.”

Here are more “eco advantage” facts on the 2011 Ford Explorer:

  • Ford makes the Explorer’s noise-dampening fender baffles from steel left over after stamping the door openings out of F-150 body sides.
  • The Explorer interior has 25 percent recycled fiber in its interior fabrics, including seat upholstery, bolster and carpeting.
  • Some 40 percent soy polyurethane foam is featured in seat cushions and seatbacks.
  • Two fuel efficient engines include a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine.
