Biosphere Expeditions is organizing a new conservation project to preserve the marine environment surrounding the islands of the Maldives.

In the Maldives, Biosphere Expeditions will collaborate with Reef Check and the Marine Conservation Society and international volunteers, to study and safeguard the coral reefs and resident whale shark population.

Volunteer travelers will participate by collecting important data on the corals, fish, and marine wildlife.  They will be guided by a marine scientist who will train and oversee their work.

Biosphere Expeditions supports critical wildlife conservation around the world, committed to protecting endangered species and habitats.

Says Kathy Gill, strategy director:

‘The coral reefs of the Maldives archipelago and the fish populations that live amongst them are extraordinarily diverse and rich…As only less than one per cent of the world’s oceans are protected it is very important that we monitor and manage areas that are doing well.”

The expedition is planned for September 10-16, 2011.  Volunteer travelers must be experienced divers with a minimum of a PADI Open Water certificate or equivalent.
